About Carrie McKinley
Today people look at me and see a strong, athletic and confident person but it hasn’t always been that way. I was active and played sports as a little kid but would say my fitness journey really started in 9th grade. I began running daily, going to the local gym and I hopped on the “fat free” diet which was the craze back then. I was never overweight … not even close but I began losing weight and liking it. To me it symbolized my will power and self control. I always had what I refer to as an “est” complex… in other words, I was a perfectionist and very competitive. This carried over into wanting to be the skinniEST. At first, this was not detrimental to my athletic performance and I was still able to run and ski competitively and even qualified for the New England championship for both sports. Fast forward to my junior year of high school and my anorexia was full blown. I had to quit the ski team (despite being Captain ) because my body fat was so low that I couldn’t stay warm. My running performance suffered and I was too weak and unhealthy to compete. What started out as a healthy lifestyle became a prison. I continued to struggle with anorexia all through college and basically spent my four years, working out 3 hours a day, studying and obsessing over the food I would and wouldn’t eat.
It wasn’t until my early 20’s that I realized how much I had missed out on life. Gradually over the years my mindset changed. I no longer desired to be ultra skinny but wanted womanly curves and muscles. By easing up on the running, focusing more on strength training and adding more protein and calories in general, I put on 35 pounds from my lowest weight. Exercise was not just a calorie burner now but something that made me feel strong and empowered. I also learned how imperative rest and recovery are and didn’t feel guilty about taking days off from working out. I found a healthy balance and realized I wanted to share my knowledge and experience with others.
In 2008, I studied to become a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Every day I watch my clients get stronger, healthier and more confident . The best part is seeing their eyes light up and the smile on their face when they see progress. As the saying goes “if you do what you love for a living, you will never work a day in your life”. Well for me, personal training does not feel like a job. It’s fun and rewarding and I can’t imagine my life without it. Whether you do a 1 on 1 training or a group session with me, my passion for fitness, knowledge in the field and sincere desire to help you will shine through. I will push you to go beyond what you would not do on your own while still empathizing with any struggles that life is throwing at you. You will never regret a workout with me and I can get you in the best shape of your life.
